Debbie Livingston

Debbie grew up in a house built by her father that abutted her great-grandfather’s farm as well as many acres of preserved land.  This gave her a lot of woods to roam. Her mom worked from their home and was often heard bellowing, “Get outside and play”, when she and her brothers got too rambunctious inside.  Debbie was happy to get out of the house and spent hours, even whole days building forts and running through the trees and bramble.  Her love of the outdoors blossomed further at a decade of Girl Scout camp and solidified with three years of Presidency of her college Outing Club.  Even though Debbie felt most free in individual pursuits she also became very dedicated to team sports, especially soccer and track. These organized pastimes became year round activities from second grade thru college.  Her passion for athleticism and the outdoors lead Debbie to pursue a career in the fitness industry.  She began her formal study at Springfield College receiving a bachelor degree in Health and Fitness with a minor in Business Management. Debbie spent the next few summers at New Life Hiking Spa in Vermont learning the ins and outs of a destination health resort.  During the winters she worked as a snowboarding instructor teaching all ages the joy of surfing the snow.  In 1999 she continued her education at UCONN with a Masters degree in Fitness Management during which she pursued and received an American Council on Exercise (ACE) Personal Trainers certification, in 2001 a Kripalu Yoga certification, and in 2008 a Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) Pilates certification. Due to starting her family she currently only maintains her Kripalu certification and a certificate in mat Pilates through the Physical Mind Institute but in 2009 Debbie obtained her certification in Child Light Yoga.

Debbie’s passion also took her to the endurance world of trail running where she has run over 60 ultra-marathons and 140 trail races since her first off-road race in 1999.  She has been the New England Grand Tree female champion from 2001-2008 and in 2008 was the regional winner of The North Face Endurance Challenge 50 miler placing 3rd overall. Debbie completed 2011 with five wins out of 6 ultra trail races, one of them winning overall. She training and races through both pregnancies and has mentors many woman who chose to stay fit through theirs.  Debbie’s highlight in the ultra trail races was breaking a 22 year old course record by 13 minutes at the Laurel Highlands 7.05 miler in 2012. She continues to race distances from 5k to 100+ miles.

Debbie is also enthusiast about being a good steward of the environment.  She has been on the Board of Advisors for the Appalachian Mountain Club since 2004, buys consciously, recycles fervently and commutes to work often pushing or pulling her son and daughter. She is also currently on the board of the Bolton Land Trust.
